Kitchen door materials compared: lacquer, acrylic, membrane, melamine and solid wood

Durability, price, care and renewability of five door types; which suits which kitchen?

The door material is the decision that most affects both the look and the budget of a kitchen. At 2026 prices the cost per linear metre of base cabinets is about 17,500 TRY in melamine and can reach 52,000 TRY in solid wood. The gap comes from the material's durability, surface finish and renewability. Below we compare the five materials objectively.

Melamine / laminate

It is a decorative paper laminated onto chipboard or MDF. It resists scratches and moisture, is easy to maintain and has the lowest price. The drawback is that damage cannot be repaired; edge-banding quality is critical for a long life. It is ideal for rental flats and budget renovations.

Membrane (PVC wrap)

An MDF door is wrapped in one piece with vacuum-heated PVC foil. It suits profiled and classic doors, and water does not collect in the joints. Near heat sources (around the hob) it may lift, so a heat barrier is needed. About 21,500 TRY per linear metre.

Matt lacquer

Five coats of polyurethane paint are applied to MDF. It gives a smooth, silky surface that can be touched up on site, which makes it a favourite for modern kitchens. Heavy impacts may chip it. About 31,000 TRY per linear metre.

High-gloss acrylic

An acrylic sheet is bonded to MDF. It offers high gloss and resistance to scratches and UV without yellowing. Fingerprints can be more visible. About 34,500 TRY per linear metre.

Solid wood

The frame is cut from solid oak or beech. It offers warm texture, a repairable surface and a long life, but it is sensitive to moisture and is the most expensive option. About 52,000 TRY per linear metre.

Which one where?

Use melamine or acrylic around the hob, membrane or lacquer near the sink, and lacquer or solid wood on visible surfaces. You can cut the budget by 15–20% by choosing durable melamine for base cabinets and lacquer for wall cabinets. Door samples can be seen in our showrooms.

Common misconceptions

  • 'Solid wood is the most durable.' — It is sensitive to moisture and heat; melamine is safer around the hob.
  • 'Glossy surfaces clean easily.' — Fingerprints show more; matt lacquer is advantageous in this respect.
  • 'Lacquer imitates cheap melamine.' — Lacquer gives MDF a special surface with five coats of paint; it is a different production process.

In conclusion, edge-banding quality and hinge brand matter as much as the material. A good melamine door lasts longer than a badly banded lacquer door. The cross-section samples in our showrooms let you see this difference with your own eyes.
